Week 1: Your Most Frequently Asked Questions – Answered!

Dear Community,

Thank you for your active participation in the first week of the UMushroom Investment Challenge! We are thrilled to see so many of you creating exciting portfolios and dedicating your time and effort to this challenge.

Since we received a lot of questions in both English and German, we’ve compiled key answers and insights below. This way, you can catch up on what your fellow participants were asking and the responses they received. Please switch to the language in the main menu that corresponds to your needs.

If you have any further questions, feel free to reach out to us at [email protected].

1. Portfolio Management and Investment Rules

Key Topic: Managing investments within the challenge’s guidelines.

  • You must invest a minimum of CHF 10,000 in at least 5 different titles.
  • You have to have max CHF 500 cash in order to fulfil the activity "Portfolio check"
  • If you want to change your portfolio, you can buy and sell stocks during the challenge. However, your portfolio must always have at least one instrument at the end of the challenge.
  • It’s important not to exceed the CHF 10,000 investment amount and to ensure you follow the rules, including holding a minimum of 5 positions.
  • If dividends are paid out by a stock, those funds can be reinvested into the portfolio.

2. Order Execution and Market Timing

Key Topic: How orders are executed and the timing involved.

  • Orders for stocks, ETFs, and funds are executed at the market’s close, meaning the next available market price after the trading day.
  • For cryptocurrencies, trades are executed continuously every hour throughout the day.
  • Orders may be delayed due to data providers; they typically execute by noon the next day.
  • Market timing can be difficult, and in the challenge, we focus on longer-term investment strategies, not on daily trades.

3. Cash and Credit Limit

Key Topic: Managing cash and using the credit limit.

  • Each portfolio has a 10% credit limit, which means you can exceed the cash balance slightly if needed for additional orders.
  • A small negative cash balance is allowed to meet the challenge’s requirements
  • However, this should be less than CHF 500 in cash.
  • If you accidentally increase your cash, the excess amount will be removed

4. Performance and Risk Scoring

Key Topic: Risk scoring and performance tracking.

  • Risk scores are calculated based on the volatility of the portfolio, with more volatile portfolios earning higher risk scores over time.
  • Your current performance score is indicative and calculated for each day during the challenge.
  • Performance points are calculated daily but awarded only on the last day based on the final performance. The best-performing portfolio can receive up to 400 points by the end of the challenge. Please read the rules for more information on the point system.
  • Your portfolio’s risk score may change over time as more data is acquired and volatility increases.

5. Portfolio Adjustments and Reinvestments

Key Topic: Adjusting the portfolio and reinvestment options.

  • You are allowed to sell securities and buy new ones throughout the challenge. However, be mindful of the portfolio guidelines.
  • Dividends from stocks can be reinvested into the portfolio.

6. Transaction Fees and Trading Limits

Key Topic: Limitations on transactions and trading fees.

  • Transactions are executed based on the market's closing prices. There are no real-time transactions like day trading.
  • For any discrepancies in the transaction execution, be assured that the trades will be executed with minimal delay.

7. Challenges with Platform Operations

Key Topic: Issues and technical challenges within the platform.

  • For issues with tasks, you can contact support by email at [email protected] with your details, including browser or app type.

8. Trading in Derivatives and Shorting

Key Topic: Restrictions on derivatives and shorting in the game.

  • Currently, short selling and buying options are not available on the platform. You can find ideas for shorting the market through ETFs.

10. Commodities

Key Topic: Various other inquiries.

  • You cannot directly add commodities (like gold, rhodium, or diamonds) to your portfolio. You can invest in stocks of companies dealing with these commodities or through ETFs.
