Vanguard Emerging Markets Stock Index Fund aims to give investors broad exposure to emerging markets by tracking the MSCI Emerging Markets Index, a market-capitalisation-weighted index of large and mid-sized company stocks. In plain English, the fund seeks to mirror the performance of this benchmark by investing primarily in equities listed in emerging markets, rather than trying to outperform it through stock picking. It follows a passive, index-tracking approach using physical acquisition of securities, holding all, or substantially all, of the index constituents in generally the same proportions as the index. Where full replication is not practical, the fund may use a sampling process to approximate the index’s risk and return characteristics as closely as possible. The portfolio is intended to remain fully invested, although it may temporarily move away from that policy in extraordinary market, political or similar conditions if needed to help avoid losses.
